Chessmen - Everything is a Game?

At our New Years Eve gaming night, I tried to bring game-related snacks.  I found some Pokemon goldfish crackers and Pepperidge Farms Chessmen cookies.

There was a brief moment where I saw a game built around those Chessmen cookies: my rook could beat Doug's bishop, or a simple high/low draws.  Then I wondered if each bag has some random selection of pieces, or if maybe there's a full set of pieces in each bag.  I saw a queen, a bishop and a pawn (I think), and the bag shows a queen, a king and a knight. but it seemed unlikely that they would fill half the bag with pawns.  Luckily (or not so luckily since this is the crap I think about when I'm trying to sleep), I took a picture, which says there are 24 cookies in each bag.  But there are two rows of 8 = 16 in a set of chess pieces.

So, a game could be made out of this.  No worse than a card game where you get random cards.  Such a game would be pointless and leave a lot of crumbs, but have a yummy buttery taste in the end.

Anything can be a game, when handled by gamers...

Idle Planet Miner: Selling Your Galaxy

Back in Idle Planet Miner, production was starting to bog down, with crafts taking an hour apiece, and sometimes needing hundreds of items to unlock new research.  So, I figured it would be a good time to test out their "Sell Your Planet" feature, which has so many people online asking questions. These idle games can't level up through an infinite many items, so they all have this same kind of game reset mechanism.  In Idle Planet Miner, the Sell Galaxy button shows you the value of your galaxy and how many credits you will get for it.  These credits are a kind of meta currency, letting you buy new rooms for your ships, with each new room offering a different game boost.  Clicking the Sell button will show you exactly what you will lose: all planets, cash, ores, alloys, items, research.  Which sounds terrible.  But you get to keep your dark matter, your managers, your beacon buffs (though you will have to research the Beacon again to get it back on screen),...

Cat-astrophe

We were looking forward to getting Catastrophe -- we were watching old videos of Lil' Bub, even the documentary Lil' Bub & Friends, and then got a ping from Lil' Bub's human about this new game with a tribute to Lil' Bub.  Had to have one.   The box opening was fine.  There's a gorgeous full-sized full-color booklet about famous video cats, including a whole page about Bub.  The cards had those famous cats, and other characters.  A lovely production.  They clearly loved these cats. But then, the gameplay was essentially about sending cats to their doom.  Spending their nine lives, and trying to avoid the Grim Reapurr, to be exact.  That would have been okay, pushing other cats down the tower so you can be the last cat standing.  But the action cards were almost entirely: gain/lose/steal a life unless you roll 3-6 or 4-6 or 5-6.  Sure, you can spend your yarn balls to reroll dice, which was cute, but it's hard to get more. ...

Back to the Favorites

We were hoping to find a fun new game on our trip this weekend, but the ones we found were pretty ordinary.  We did bring one of our favorites, Skip Bo Junior.  It's nice to just deal out the cards and play without having to learn new tricks.  Although we always wonder if we are forced to play every card.  Sometimes, the only strategy there is is to hold back a card to not give your opponent an easy time. Anyway, kudos to the classics and favorites. We found these little gummy pizzas the next night.   Not exactly a game, just being playful. We also play Yut on the tablet a few times per week -- that simple game is still hard to beat for total Sorry-style chaos and unpredictability.
