The Lost Heir (1908)

Image
Here's one I got a while back, tucked into an old box of The Game of Nations.  (See previous post.) The rules and history can be found here: https://healthy.uwaterloo.ca/museum/VirtualExhibits/CardGames/LostHeir/index.html Check out the page at BoardGameGeek: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5670/lost-heir Judging from their edition/photo gallery, mine is the 1908 Milton Bradley set. Anyway, we finally got a chance to sit down and play a few hands.  It's a classic trick-taking card game, so common from that era (1890s to 1940s).  They are not my favorite types onf card games, partly because they play best with four players and we never have four.  I was wondering how the theme would play out, since we're technically playing police personnel searching for a Lost Heir.   The game play starts with a bid and a dealer who chooses a trump suit.  In this case we tried calling the trup suit the HQ, but kept calling it the trump suit anyway.  Then each trick...

Old Game of Nations with a surprise

Image
We did a quick road trip through Ramona, CA today.  We stopped at a big estate liquidation place and found two old old games on one of the back shelves.  They were actually priced reasonably: the Game of Nations box was $10 and Hokum was $12.  A lot of times, the things that accumulate in antique shops have inflated prices, but this wasn't an antique shop and they were actually right in the range for a quick sale.  I might have paid $20 off the shelf.  The issue is, I would have to read the rules, figure out the correct number of cards and risk having missing cards.  If someone offered it online and took good photos and I knew all the cards were there, for game of that period I am actively seeking, I can do $50.  Prices are such subjective things. When I got home I immediately saw that Hokum was just a Bingo game, but it was from 1927 and in good shape.  It was still sealed at the store, and the packaging was tougher than the plastic used these da...

Game of the Goose: two new examples

Image
One of the board games in the 100-game pack I mentioned in my previous post was the classic Game of the Goose which I've covered in an artic le from last year . It's always fun to see these boards -- there's always some twist ... different numbers which mean different things. In this case it's the only time I've ever seen the game of the goose with no actual geese on the board.  Okay,  one Goose.  Really?  You're supposed to land on the geese and double your move.  Since there were so few geese we decided that any space with any kind of poultry counted as a Goose. Yeah, it worked.   The  board was also missing the classic space that sends you back all the way to the beginning. Usually there's one of these go back to the start spaces about four boxes before the end of the board so when you overshoot the end you go back four, land on a go all the way to beginning space and it's hilarious.  It also didn't mention the near universal rule that wh...
