A Batch of Peg Games

A while back I heard about some new auction app and skimmed some listings and found these little wooden peg games.

They made me think of the times I would be out on a road trip somewhere and stop at a little diner, and they would have games likes these.  Though the diners usually had variations of simple peg solitaire ("golf") and no dice to roll.

These were all simple racing games, dressed up in sport themes.  Just roll dice and move.   They each came in plastic wrap with a red and a blue peg and two dice.

The football one was playable.  The golf one was unplayable because there were more negatives than positives, especially -3 spaces for rolling a 7; but Anne did roll a two on her second roll and got a hole-in-one win.  For the next 10 minutes I don't think either of reached the halfway mark before getting sent back.  The derby game was just going around in circles, and we used an extra die each to track which lap we were on.  The rules for tennis were cut off but I guess you play to 9 points. For the basketball game it looks like the home team gets the inside track and visitors get the unmarked outside track and its just a race to 21.

Nothing fancy here, just a neat little batch that go together.

Empires & Puzzles: End of Season 5

I finished Season 5 (Egypt).  The last battle was impressive, with Set starting at about 18K HP with the usual minions, after which he becomes a titan battle with about 60KHP, and as that was winding down with my guys getting very weak, he came back as a regular battle with anoth 13KHP.  I think I did the 75 gems to buy a second chance, but it was a good end-of-season adventure with some surprises. A few nights back, I got an event summons and came up with Heimdall, that really difficult opponent who blows his horn and heals allies above their normal max HP, AND can reincarnate fallen allies.  Now he's on my team 6, and I'm training him up to help with the alliance wars. Last night I got a few event summons again, and bought a few more for $5.99.  Got some new ones: lemur construct, treevil, and a bunch of really odd characters.  I later got 3 summons from coins at the end of the event and got two different gnomes and some kind of magical flamingo.  Heck, 500 coins fo

Peace by Peace: Succulents

We got Peace by Peace: Succulents a few weeks back at the Toy Box in San Clemente, CA on the way back from a weekend trip.  I also got the cactus-themed game "What's the Point" in that same batch, so it was an odd pair.  Two of the types of plants I used to grow back when I had space to grow things. Anyway, Peace by Peace is not really a game, it's a series of 50 puzzles.  There is a set of 45 triangle-shaped tiles with colored leaf patterns in each corner, then a set of 50 cards giving puzzles to be solved.  Each card list which numbered tiles to use and shows a few starting cards by their number, but not what position they're in, followed by some empty spaces and possibly the colors of a few other corners. The challenge is to work out how to complete the pattern using the tiles available.  It's a bit annoying finding those tiles to setup the puzzles, but we settled on stacking them in piles of 1-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39 and 40-45.  Then we could easily find wh

Qwixx

  Qwixx is a colored dice game from Gamewright, just six dice and a score pad. You can check it out here , even read the full rules.  Basically, there are two white dice and four colored dice, which match up with the four colored rows of numbers on the score cards.  The flow is that on each turn, the next player throws the dice.  All players get a chance to score the two white dice.  Then the player who rolled gets to score a combination of any white die and any one colored die.  So, everyone gets the white 2+4=6, then the active player can try to score an extra box of maybe white 6 plus blue 4 to get the blue 10.  The non-active players don't HAVE to score anything, but the rolling player must score one number on their turn or take a 5-point penalty box.  The genius of the colored scoring rows is that the top two rows go from 2 up to 12, and the bottom two rows go from 12 down to 2.  If they all went from 2 to 12, you would just always be looking for higher dice as the gam
