Geppetto's

On a trip to Mission Valley and Mission Beach, we randomly stopped at the Fashion Valley Mall for some food options, and came across a colorful toy/game shop called Geppetto's.  It had a big selection of games, toys, activity books and overall fun, playful things.  The games were mostly casual classics and party games, no really heavy boxes or Wingspan, just quick basic games and puzzles, from Bananagram to Monopoly.

Comically, two days later we would be in Old Town San Diego, where there was another Geppetto's to visit.  It turns out this was the original shop, and the woman who worked there said they now had 9 locations.

Here is their website.

I'm sure I have run into them before, after all, the website says they've been "San Diego's Toy Tradition for Over 40 Years!"  Although, none of their locations are in places we visit regularly.

The nearest store is in Carlsbad, so I am making a mental note to go check them out (again) soon.  Probably next payday ... we need some new things to keep us entertained.

Sep 14 update: we drove down to the store in Carlsbad and picked up a few items.  The board game section is about 1/10th of the store, and we already owned or tried/reviewed/dnoated about a third of the games on their shelf.  We don't have a use for the party games or "pick something and be judged games" that are so common these days, or agility/speed games.  This left a few to choose from.

So we got Smart Dog Agility Course, which I didn't see was branded as a "1 Player Puzzle Game".  That's fine.  It reminded me of Cat Crimes, the very first game I wrote about on this blog, and those can be solved by one player but are more fun when two players work together.

I also grabbed 10 Days in the USA because it looked a bit different from other games we tried.  And a regular deck of cards where every card has a dog doing yoga ... for our collection of dog/cat-themed games.  We can replace one of the regular boring decks we have.  The last one was a little deck of activities for kids during road trips.  I like those for some reason.
