Yut: numbering and sharing game moves
A possible numbering for a Yut board, so that moves from our favorite game sessions can be shared:
9 8 7 6 5
10 22 17 4
23 18
11 19 3
24 20
12 25 21 2
13 14 15 16 1
FINISH
Numbered this way (around the outside, then the shortest path, then the other paths), that funny ending would have been
Board position: A: 1 done, 21(3); B: 16(4). The number of pieces stacked is in parentheses. Each needs just 2 to win.
Then the finishing moves in that game I mentioned were, with rolls written in brackets:
1. A: [1] 21-1 B: [1] 16 x 1(3)
2. A: [2] 0-2 B: [2] FINISH(4) = WIN
Some notes on choices that come up.
- You have one piece on 19 (center) and roll [-1]. Move back to 23 so you can continue straight through center. Do not move to 18, since you would then need a [1] to hit the center and get on the short path again.
- movement quirks: from 5 you can only go to 17, from 9 to 22; from 13 to 14, from 19 to 20. You can't go down other paths to capture pieces.
Some funny outcomes:
- Various players have pieces on 3, 4 and 5. You still have a piece at home.
You roll [1]: Hx3, new roll [1] 3x4, new roll [1] 4x5, new roll [3] 5-19 = you sent 3 stacks home and you are sitting on the center with nobody behind you.
- You still have a piece at home.
Roll [5,4,3] and get all the way home by [5] 1-5, [3] 5-19, [4] 19-FINISH.
Isn't there a standard numbering for this? It's not like there is tournament-level wisdom here, but it would be fun to be able to talk about favorite moves and surprises. I was unable to find any written record of games. Image searches show boards with the first 5 spaces numbered, ones with animals on each space repeating in order of their number value, and ones where every space has a unique Korean name.
