Kitty Cat Resort (app)
It's not such a leap to go from cat-themed card games to cat-themed Android apps. Apps are so easy to find and get, and try out for free with no harm done. I will try not to go too far down the rabbit hole, but here is another one I found over the weekend, after trying others and not being impressed. Kitty Cat Resort by FatherMade games.
This is an idle-time app, so expect to earn a few points for poking around at first, then building things and watching the points go up to ridiculous levels over time ... even earning points while you are away.
What makes this one work is the smoothness of the cat animations and the good humor of it all. You are just trying to build an island resort to attract as many cats to live there as you can. There are a few basic buildings you can build. You start with a Fishing Hut where -- I am not kidding -- the cats sit down with fishing poles and pull fish out into the bucket before walking off and popping out a hairball.
The next few attractions you can build are: a bouncy wooden airplane on a spring (where did they come up with that one?), a scratching tree, beach blankets they can flop down onto, a floaty shack where they grab inner tubes and float around for a while looking really lethargic, and a drink bar (too cute). Every step of the way, the cats look like they are enjoying themselves, and have a range of cute and snarky comments. There are many different attributes you can level up. At some point, you move off to another island.
New cats come to the island on little wooden boats, often with gifts,
but they won't stay unless you have the exact things they want.
You can pet the cats, give them costumes (not my thing) and poses, even snap photos of them. The photos are a challenge of their own, since just like in real life, the cats don't stay still for very long. You may catch them in the perfect moment but by the time you snap the picture, you get just their butt walking away.
The cats are just a treat to watch. Switching from one cat to the next to see all the weird things they are doing is fun. The cats even interact with each other, whether it is giving back massages or some face-slappy fight, with movements very well studied from the ways that real cats do those same things.
The checklist of quests always seems to have good suggestions for what to do next, but you can level up some attractions preemptively. You hit a bit of a jam when it comes time to build the drink shack because it costs 25M coins and you will probably only be at 5M at the time. There are a fair range of free items in the shops, and 50 ad skip coupons for $1.99 seems fair. When you do buy an item or costume or gift pack with coins or gems or a buck or two, it is delivered by a hilarious cat mailman who will pat the box, prance around a while, then start yawning.
Overall, the game is a bit silly but has a lot of personal touches. I can't see anything wrong with a pasttime that's relaxing. Check this guy out ...
